The HSE will begin another round of metalworking fluid (MWF) inspections from October 2023 until March 2024. This follows on from their most recent MWF inspections from May to September 2021.
The HSE have highlighted the common issues they have found with compliance:
Exposure to MWF via inhaled mist can cause occupational asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Skin exposure to MWF can cause skin irritation and dermatitis. All of which are avoidable with the correct control measures in place. There is no known safe level of exposure to MWF and levels must be reduced to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).
An occupational hygienist can help to determine if you are compliant and protecting your staff adequately.
