Risk Assessment

Our health and safety experts can conduct a detailed and comprehensive risk assessment of any potential health and safety issue.

Risk assessments are a vital part of any business’s risk management process and are a legal requirement under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR).

A risk assessment will identify the current and potential hazards in your workplace so that you can take the required actions to make sure they do not harm your employees or anyone else you are responsible for.

We work with our clients to provide straightforward, practical risk assessments that help you to understand how to work in safety.  We regard risk assessments as being a means of understanding how to achieve safety.  To us it is about what you can do and how to do it safely, it is not about what you cannot do.

The risks you could face will depend on the types of activities your business is involved in and the types of premises you occupy, however, the areas we assess most regularly include:

  • Potential causes of occupational diseases and illnesses such as dust, fume, vapours and other hazardous substances (COSHH), asbestos, Legionella, and noise and vibration.
  • Physical hazards such as electrical safety, fire safety, manual handling, the control of hazardous substances and repetitive strain injury.
  • Work processes such as cleaning with chemical substances, maintenance work, working with contractors, interacting with the public and providing health and safety training for staff.
  • Equipment including LEV, RPE and fit-testing and DSE.
  • Employment issues such as stress, safe working hours, driving for work, lone working and violence at work.

More recently we have also been supporting clients with COVID-19 Risk Assessments.

Given the potential threat to workers’ health and wellbeing caused by the pandemic, businesses must now be able to show that the measures they have taken to prevent COVID-19 transmission have been suitably assessed before their premises re-open.  We will interpret the relevant Government and HSE guidance to provide you with a bespoke COVID-19 Risk Assessment to support you with reopening or operating your business safely.

 

Why do you need to conduct regular risk assessments?

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations state:

“An employer is required to undertake an assessment of the risks to health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected by their work activity.”

A professionally conducted assessment will identify whether the processes you have in place are capable of controlling the associated risks identified.  The process of developing a risk assessment will also provide an opportunity to formulate a workable and realistic action plan to help you if any gaps need to be filled or processes strengthened or replaced.

It is also important to remember that this plan (and the risk assessment itself) will form an essential part of your defence should you find yourself facing a civil claim or prosecution from an Enforcement Officer.

Sometimes it is hard to know what is required or where to start.  For many the risk assessment process can also be time consuming, complicated and even bureaucratic.  However, from a legal perspective you need to be able to prove the required risks assessments have been completed to the appropriate standard.
